Transportation Design


Transportation Design is a field in design which is concerned with the primary means of transportation and the development of the appearance and to some extent the ergonomics and aesthetics of automobiles. It concurrently deals with the study of aircraft, spacecraft or marine vessels. Automobile design is largely practiced by designers who usually have an art background and a degree in industrial design or transportation design.

Skills / Processes:

The role of a transportation designer is able to reconcile aspects of style, technique, aerodynamics, production feasibility and ergonomics. This kind of designer must have a profound understanding of the product and the functions that the consumer is looking for, so as to be able to have a clear idea about the relationship between design and marketing, innovation and commercial requirements along with the social trend and the economic background in which he is operating. In this design field, there is a large range of work in places such as designing private and commercial automobiles, marine vessels, motorcycles, aircrafts, rockets or heavy weight transportation vehicles. Career options in the field of transportation design go as far as becoming interior designers, transport design, vehicle design and collaborating with entrepreneurs too.

In other words, it’s a learning curve that sets off with understanding aesthetics of automobiles (exterior/interior), human factors, intricacies of vehicle packaging, display and controls etc.) at product level, it escalates to tackle the broader aspects and complexities around personal/public transportation, at system and service levels, through specific design projects.
