CEED FAQ's

CEED is an entrance exam for Postgraduate studies in the field of technological design held annually. Colleges like IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Jabalpur, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bangalore consider CEED score for the admission. The examination is conducted by IIT Bombay and Industrial Design Centre.

Since 2013, CEED has changed its pattern. Now, the paper has two parts, A and B, and an interview.
  • Part A is marked out of 50. It will test you on Visualisation and Spatial ability,Environmental and Social awareness,Analytical and Logical reasoning,Language and creativity,Design thinking and problem solving,Observation and design sensitivity.
  • Part B will test you on drawing,creativity,Analytical and problem solving skills and Communication skills. They are the most time consuming parts of the paper.
  • CEED is an entrance exam for Post Graduate studies(M.Des/Ph.d), and UCEED is an entrance exam for Under Graduate studies(B.des).

    1. Work on previous years’ question papers. It will help you to gain a perspective on the subject.
    2. Read comic strips. You can learn how to build a story as certain questions are based on storyline. Comic strips by Peter Dawes, reading Manga(Japanese comic strips) and readwritethink website are helpful.
    3. Learn free hand sketching.Part B requires you to draw basic perspective and figure sketches. It is also important to visualize what you want to do beforehand so that you can execute better on paper.
    4. Be creative while answering questions. The evaluator wants a clear and accurate answer, so its necessary plan your answers well.
    5. Practice with the right stationery. Use 2 grades of pencil. H-grade for rough work and light drawings and B-grade for shading. It will be great if you pack in a non dust eraser too.

    Candidates should have a graduate/diploma programme of 4-5 years/must have passed GD Arts Diploma Programme.
    Note: Candidates can apply for the exam any number of times as there is no age bar restriction.

    IIT Bombay (Industrial Design),IISc Bangalore(Product design & Manufacturing),IIT Delhi (Instrument design development centre), IIT Guwahati (Dept of Design), IIT Hyderabad (Dept of Design),IIT Kanpur (Design discipline) and IIT Jabalpur (Design discipline) accepts CEED score.
    CEED is the entrance exam in the field of technological design for PG(M.des/Ph.d), whereas NID DAT is the entrance exam for UG(B.Des/GDPD) and PG courses(M.Des).
    Marks above 55 is considered as a good CEED score.

    There are a total of 200 seats. 6,423 candidates had registered for CEED on January 20th 2018, while 5,507 students actually wrote the exam. Out of these, 1003 students have qualified CEED 2018.

    A portfolio is required for the examiner to know your creativity and capabilities. Your ideas and thought processes should come across and it should be interesting.
    1. Prepare your portfolio in such a way that your interest and passion for design comes across to the examiner.
    2. Make sure you don’t have similar type of themes or designs. Try to elaborate your works.
    3. Works made using Photoshop,finished products,photography, 3D Modelling and documentation can be shown to the examiner.
    4. The examiner will give lots of materials, you will have to come up with a product within a certain time:- newspapers,chart paper,pastel sheets, corrugated sheets,cardboard, mount board, OHP sheet,gateway sheet,transparent sheet, wires of different thicknesses in copper and aluminium, clay,thermocol and its balls,soap(sometimes),ice cream sticks,fabric,threads of different thicknesses and materials,straws,ping pong balls,ribbons,cotton are some of the materials that you will end up getting.
    5. Prepare the same way you did for the written exam. Have an overview of the topics. They will even ask simple aptitude questions.
    6. They may ask questions on design,creative exercises and story writing.

    It is not hard to crack CEED exam. Constant work and visualising things beforehand will help you get good grades. Creativity is also important. Make sure to start preparing early.
