How does one become a Designer in India?

Career Path

To do an undergraduate program in Design (B. Des) in India, there are 2 exams that one may target:

NID: To get admission into NID Ahmedabad, NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Haryana, NID Madhya Pradesh & NID Assam
UCEED: To get admission into IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati IIT Hyderabad and IIITDM Jabalpur

Primary Departments in Design Colleges

Generally, the first year is common and students start to choose their specializations in subsequent academic years. The broad categories of specialization are listed below:

Communication Design: Animation Film Design, Exhibition Set Design, Film and Video Communication, Graphic Design, Photography Design etc.
Industrial Design: Product Design, Transportation Design, Toy and Game Design, Glass and Ceramic Design, Furniture Design etc.
Textile Design: Textile Design, Apparel Design, Lifestyle Accessory Design etc.

How are students ranked to get through B.Des programmes in India?

NID - 70% of NID DAT Prelims and 30% of NID DAT Mains will be taken into consideration. The students will be asked to submit creative work samples and Statement of Purpose/Thematic Reflections for admission to B.Des programs offered by NID

UCEED - Total UCEED score will be calculated by adding the marks obtained in Part-A and Part-B.

It is highly recommended that students write both NID & UCEED to maximize their chances of getting into a good design college of their choice.

Target Scores or Ranks

NID (UG) Prelims - A target score of 55+ is what students need to focus on to get qualified for NID (Mains)
UCEED - A target mark of 200+ is what students need to focus on to get into IITs and IITDM Jabalpur for B.Des programs.

UCEED 2025 Syllabus

Part A

Visualization and Spatial reasoning:

Ability to visualise and transform 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships.

Practical and scientific knowledge:

Know-how of scientific principles and everyday objects.

Observation and design sensitivity:

The capacity to detect concealed properties in daily life and think critically about them. Attention to detail, classification, analysis, inference and prediction.

Environment and society:

General awareness of environmental, social and cultural connections with design.

Analytical and logical reasoning:

Ability to analyse qualitative and quantitative information.

Language:

Proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English.

Creativity:

Grasp of verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs and symbols.

Part B

Drawing:

Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective and shading.

Design aptitude:

Capability to practically and appropriately respond to problems/situations with ingenuity and empathy.

All colleges have a 3 stage admission process - Design Aptitute Test (DAT), Studio Test & Interview with Portfolio review. So applicants must have a holistic approach to their preparation.
