How does one get into NIFT?

The final step in order to secure admission in B.Des programme offered at different NIFT campuses is to appear for the Situation Test. NIFT Entrance Exam is a two-tiered process, wherein, aspirants need to give CAT (Creative Ability Test), GAT (General Ability Test) followed by the Situation Test.

NIFT Exam consists of the following:

1. Round 1: Written Test

  • General Ability Test (GAT) – All applicants
  • Creative Ability Test (CAT) – B.Des applicants

2. Round 2: Situation Test

  • Situation Test – B.Des Applicants only

Each of these is described below:

General Ability Test (GAT):

General Ability Test (GAT) comprises of various sections as given below:

  • Quantitative Ability: This sub-test is designed to test the quantitative ability of the candidates. The sub test consists of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion and Distance.
  • Communication Ability and English Comprehension: This subtest is aimed at testing the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, comprehend a situation from a given passage etc.
  • Analytical Ability and Logical Ability:This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s capacity for inference and logic from the given information and to evaluate the candidate’s ability to identify the given problem and apply reasoning in solving the core issues of the problem. Concepts and practice of creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.

Creative Ability Test (CAT):

This test is administered for both UG and PG Design Programmes to judge the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of colour and illustration skills.

Situation Test:

Situation test is basically a hands-on test which is used to evaluate candidate’s skills for material handling and innovative ability. This is done based on the given situation and set of materials. One should keep in mind that no additional material will be provided or allowed. The model will be evaluated on space visualization, innovative and creative use of the given material, the composition of elements, colour scheme, construction skill, the finesse of the model and at last overall presentation. These parameters will then be checked with the write up explaining the concept used in the model constructed. Since the medium of instruction in NIFT Exam is English, the write-up will be in English only. No marks will be given for write-up in any other language.

NOTE: Students seeking admission in M.Des programmes have to appear for GD-PI round after the situation test.

It is recommended for B.Des aspirants to prepare a portfolio as well since, surprises are always there at the Studio Test. Besides, if not NIFT’s, other colleges always look for Portfolio to assess skills of students. There are a host of colleges like Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pearl Academy, UnitedWorld Institute of Design, Woxsen School of Design and others. To see how to get into these colleges, you could also look at the “Apply to Colleges” tab in DQ Edge.

NOTE:

  • For NIFT B.Des program, there is no group discussion and personal interview.
  • Portfolio is also not required. Most of the private schools require a portfolio.
  • NID's does not have a fashion course however, they have textile and apparel design.

Physical Classes will take place in our studios at Bangalore, Mangalore, Chennai, Pune, Thrissur, Nagpur & Hyderabad.
